Further Gold for Australia in 2012 INAS World Championship Giant Slalom

Another day, another Gold for Australian Team member Nicole Harris. In extremely testing conditions she narrowly took out the Giant Slalom event at the 2012 INAS World Championships for the Intellectually Disabled, fractions of a second ahead of Austrian Team Member Heidi Mackowitz. Teammate Olivia Sayers finished in a gutsy ninth position in the Turkish blizzard.

Strong winds and heavy snowfall were the order of the day, which are never a particularly good combination for ski racing. However the two girls representing Australia took it in their stride and competed strongly again. Nicole paid tribute to her coaching team in Kimberley, Canada where she has been based for the past few Northern winters and has credited them with the improvements that have led to her success.

Merely completing both runs in such poor weather is a fantastic achievement, and Olivia is to be strongly congratulated for doing so with the added pressure of competing at a world level in skiing for the first time.

Regrettably Olivia’s mother and gun photographer Fiona was not able to repeat yesterday’s fantastic shots due to the blizzard, but at least they do convey just how foul the weather was!

Our final race is a Super G which will be held tomorrow morning and hopefully in better weather. Following this will be a closing ceremony during which the medals for all the events will be presented. Naturally we are hoping for a ‘clean sweep’ of Gold for Nicole and another strong performance from Olivia.

The official results will be available on the event website at https://erzurum2012iwsc.com and photos/other information will be available on the event’s Facebook Page

Australian Skiers Nicole Harris and Olivia Sayers have placed First and Fifth respectively in the Slalom at the 6th INAS World Championships for the Intellectually Disabled held at the Palandoken Resort in Erzurum, Turkey.

After a day’s delay due to poor weather we headed out into fresh snow and more clear skies and the racing conditions were fair for all competitors.

Nicole is a multiple World Champion in events previously held in France and Italy, but until today had not completed a World Champ Slalom race so her result was both a thrill and a relief for herself and her coach & mother Sharyn. Nicole said after the completion of her two runs “I was really happy with my result!”. Nicole took the lead after the first run and maintained it through her second run to be ranked first overall and World Champion for 2012.

This is Olivia’s first appearance on the skiing world stage being a multiple World Champion and World Record holder in Swimming. She skied with skill and composure to improve her Sixth place after the first run to finish Fifth overall. Olivia said after the race “I had fun and enjoyed myself!”

The official results will be available on the event website at https://erzurum2012iwsc.com and photos/other information will be available on the event’s Facebook Page

Training Update – Feb 25 2012 – The Road to Turkey

Firstly thanks to all who read and commented on the first Training Update (link here) – Olivia enjoyed reading every single comment and very much appreciates them. It’s great to know she has so much support out there and it is very motivating.

We are now in Istanbul on our way to Erzurum. Our 3 days of training since the last report were all excellent, the weather in Flaine was perfect as were the training conditions on and off the race course. We worked hard on our GS and Slalom technique and feel well prepared for the competition. Although Flaine was well recommended by a trusted friend it was a relief to arrive and find that everything fit the bill. The race hill and organisation with Gilles and Rene from Flaine Super Ski was excellent, and Flaine itself was a fantastic training venue thanks to its well organised slopes, excellent grooming and perfect snowfall and aspect. Also as a Chamonix fan the view of the Mont Blanc Massif from the top is unparalelled. Until we experience the competition itself and also find out the next venue we cannot plan too far ahead, but we agreed that Flaine ticked all the boxes and it is likely we would return if the other circumstances fell into place.

We arrived in Istanbul at approx 7pm local time and leave again 24 hours later which will give us almost a full day to explore before continuing on to Erzurum which is the competition venue. We will have 2 days for familiarisation and training before the first race on Tuesday. If you are interested the competition schedule is here.

We are eagerly anticipating training on the competition venues to see how the races will compare with our training, and also have a sneak peek at the other competitors.

Please see some more photos below, and again you can leave your comments, well wishes and support below. Olivia reads every single one and they are truly appreciated.

I will update again from Erzurum.

Training Update: Feb 21 2012 – Chamonix & Flaine

Olivia training in Flaine

This is a report on the first week of training for Olivia Sayers, who will be representing Australia at the 2012 INAS World Championships for the Intellectually Disabled to be held in Erzurum, Turkey from Feb 27th to March 24th. I am fortunate to have been selected as the volunteer coach for the team. Olivia has Down Syndrome and is a remarkable athlete, holding many World Championships and World Records as a swimmer, she has been a lifelong skier at Mt Buller and this year has chosen to add competitive skiing to her repertoire.

Myself, Olivia and her mother Fiona left Melbourne on Feb 14th and flew to Geneva via Abu Dhabi on Etihad, and after a long and uneventful journey we caught a shuttle to Chamonix. We arrived in poor weather so it was not until the morning that the majestic peaks that tower over the town revealed themselves, and I was able to share what is a very special place for me with Olivia and Fiona. According to the Chamonix Tourist Office the snow is the best in the last 40 years and we found the skiing superb. We stayed at the lovely Hotel Faucigny and skied 3 days at Brevent & Flegere. The weather was perfect as was the snow and we used our time in Chamonix as a warm up for Olivia and also a chance to try out her new race skis.

We then caught a taxi over to Flaine for a week of race training. I was introduced to the Flaine Super Ski program by a former Buller colleague of mine Lynne Stainbrook who has taught at Flaine for over 40 years. Flaine Super Ski provides daily Slalom and GS courses and training on a dedicated race hill with its own poma lift, and has been most welcoming and accommodating to us.

We have spent 3 days so far in Flaine training Slalom and GS in the mornings, and free skiing in the afternoon. Flaine is a purpose built ski resort with superb groomed slopes for our race training. We could not have wished for a more appropriate training base and we are making excellent progress.

We have 3 further days training here before we fly to Turkey for the competition. Naturally we are very excited but there is also the element of the unknown as Erzurum is in quite a remote location and is not well known to Western skiers so it has been hard to find out information on the resort. But we are training on a steep and technical course so we will be well covered for all outcomes.

Please enjoy the photos below, and also use the comments below to pass on your well wishes to Olivia for her training and races.

I will update again in the next few days.

TR: Hakuba Cortina 29th Jan 2012 – Rolling In The Deep

We spent much of yesterday evening wondering what exactly happened that day. The powder was mindblowing yet it exerted a calm over Team Powder Bible rather than the usual euphoria that typically follows an epic day. A sense of anxiety had been brewing, despite the fact that we had spent the bulk of this trip skiing powder in one form or another, we hadn’t scored big time. That emotion was rectified by some of the deepest snow we had encountered anywhere, and with a great looking forecast it was great knowing that things would continue.

Cortina reported yet another 25cm overnight so the destination for the day was an easy decision. The only factor that would make you not consider today to be an epic powder day was the conditions that preceded it. The snow-starved residents of the Western US would kill for what we found today, but we approached it with a somewhat relaxed attitude due to the physical toll on our bodies and the mental calm provided by yesterday’s efforts.

There was still plenty of fresh in the trees, with face shots most turns, but fewer choking episodes and wondering just how close that tree actually is as you make your third totally submerged turn……

TR: Hakuba Cortina 28th Jan 2012 – Epic Pow in The White Room

Team Powder Bible have rolled in to Hakuba with exquisite timing, hitting Cortina in the midst of an epic snow cycle.

While we had great fun in Niseko with excellent company the snow gods didn’t deliver, yet in true ski holiday fashion it started dumping as we were due to leave. It went against all my principles not to reschedule our exit but this was due to the forecast for Hakuba showing strong snowfall for the coming week. I had faith, stuck firm and we were well rewarded. We hooked up with Sandy from the ski.com.au forums who was most kind in picking us up from the airport and having us at his home, and also showing us around Tokyo for the day and driving us up to Hakuba, it is most appreciated!

Once we made our way up to Hakuba we settled in at the White Horse Hotel. Our first day was a little bit of a misfire, we read the early report for Cortina and they had not yet decided to open the top lifts. Not wanting to take the risk we headed to Happo One but after the first couple of early runs the place was pretty solidly tracked as the upper lifts were delayed opening for avalanche control. It was due to a stroke of good luck that we were in the right place at the right time when one of the upper lifts opened and we were able to have half a dozen epic runs with face shots every turn. It wasn’t pleasant however when we got home and realised that Cortina did indeed open one of their top lifts and the day there was being called ‘best ever’ by people who really do know their powder snow.

So all we could do was go there today. Another 40cm fell overnight making the total around 2m of fresh snow in the last 4-5 days, and we were also rewarded with the opening of the other top lift, which had not yet opened during the storm cycle and yielded snow that was bordering on too deep. (I know what you are thinking but it’s true!) – We ran in to Mark102 and paedde from the ski.com.au forums in the line for the first lift and Mark was extremely generous in showing us around for the day, he and Patrick also got the cameras out and took the great pics you see below.

It’s hard to describe the day, it was basically a continuous face shot with multiple episodes of choking. I have never had to stop so much during powder runs due to inhaling snow and complete disorientation due to my goggles being caked in snow. Only once have I skied snow this deep before but never so much of it during a day. Every run yielded amazing blower powder and thanks to Cortina’s policies which are far less regressive than other Hakuba areas we were able to enjoy it in nice steep tree glades.

TR: Climbing the Weisshorn (Hokkaido) 20/1/12

After a few days of pleasant powder the sun has come out, and given the warming we found yesterday and the inevitable crusts that would follow, we decided that a ski tour would be in order.

Given our unfamiliarity with the area we decided for a very safe and conservative option, and decided to climb the Weisshorn, where the majority of the ascent would be within the old disused Weiss ski area. Weiss is generally used by snowmobiles however we were fortunate not to have to share it with them today, in fact the only other sign of life was a single snowboarder, and also the infernal lift announcements from Niseko booming across the valley.

Apart from a small pitch near the summit the slope angles were too low for avalanches, though while we saw some tempting tracks heading down the main summit bowl there were enough signals that we shouldn’t be skiing down especially considering our conservative mindset.

Our friend Andy who is the Program Director of Japan Powder Tours based out of Moiwa joined us for the day, it was his first ever ski tour and we were glad to share it with him.

Given the tired legs from the skiing so far, the pace was moderate and we kept the skin track angles low, and didn’t torture Andy with any kick turns, but when we saw the sun lowering in the sky we skipped a couple of gears and forged our way up to the summit. I think it was about a 500m vert climb, so nothing record breaking but not insubstantial either.

We did feast on a sushi lunch during the climb which is something that is really quite unique.

We were rewarded with a stunning view on the summit seeing both the Sea of Japan and the Pacific, not to mention the striking Mt Yotei and also Annupuri (the main peak of Niseko) and also Iwanopuri.

Once we summited the light was getting low so we made our way back down. In the conservative vein of the day we skied some lovely powder down what I am guessing was the main intermediate run of the old Weiss resort – the pitch was mellow but apart from jumping the occasional snowmobile track the main obstacles were our own skin tracks.. As always with ski touring the descent was lovely with every single turn earned for the day.

The long climb also allowed time to reflect on the sad loss of Sarah Burke. The sport we all love is not without its risks and we should all remember that the professionals out there are tempting fate every day in order to provide us with entertainment.

We thoroughly enjoyed the day, and followed it up with a soak in a local Onsen and then dinner at one of the best restaurants in Hirafu.

It was a superb day and we are now eagerly awaiting the snowfall anticipated starting tomorrow afternoon.

Team Powder Bible has left Australia on a stealth mission to the powder of Japan. We kept it quiet in the leadup as we wanted to suprise a friend, which worked very well so thanks to all whom helped keep the secret.

We have skied for 3 days now warming up and familiarising ourselves with the area, while we are yet to receive a mega dump of Niseko’s famous powder we have skied pretty consistent boot to knee deep snow each day.

I will endeavour to write semi-regular reports on the snow and our adventures throughout our three week trip, but here’s a teaser of what we have been up to so far:
